INTERVIEW WITH UWE THOLEN

Please introduce yourself, tell us about you (age, nationality, profession) and how you became a simracer

Hello simracing friends, I´m a soldier, 53 yrs old and live in the north-west region of Germany. I´m married and have two great sons (19 and 14 yrs old).

I always played racing games like « NASCAR Racing » which was released 1994 and « Colin McRae Rally 2.0 from 2000. Later on I was looking for games including the « Nordschleife » so I came over « Gran Tourismo » on PS 3 to « Race 07 » on PC it was a Formula Raceroom addon.

But all over the years I was mainly interested in playing ego-shooters with my friends and simracing took only a small part in my gaming life. Things changed in 2020 when I purchased Assetto Corsa, it has also a Nordchleife and with the Content Manger it´s really great to install mods and cars and so on. I played it many hours on my own and always with a simple game-pad.

My older son then got a G29 for Christmas and I tried it too, this experience was so amazing that I directly ordered the wheel that I now own.

How long have you played ACC ?

I bought ACC in Dezember 2020 and have nearly a playtime of 800 hrs right now.

Tell us how the idea of the eSeniors came to you ?

Mr. Zuckerberg with his Facebook made a proposal to me to join the eSeniors group. That opened a new dimension of simracing to me.

How was it racing in the Eseniors Championship ?

My first race with the eSeniors was on 20th March 2021 and I was very very nervous not to harm others race. It was my first online race ever against real simracers, It was very exciting to me and I wanted more of that.

It´s really a great pleasure to race with all this cool guys from all over the world, never expected that this would happen to me in this way.

How many hours did you spend preparing yourself for a Race, and why is it important ?

During the first year it took most time to learn the tracks and get them in mind and prepare the car settings, so I watched a lot of videos and practiced a lot on every track in the week before each race, I´d say 6hrs minimum.

Now it´s easier because I know the tracks and the car setups are almost ready. I prepare about a hour before each race to get in the flow of the track. After the races I watch the replays to analyze my behaviour and performance during the race.

What kind of equipment do you use (wheel, pedals, PC, screen, etc) ?

AMD Ryzen 5 3600X

32 GB RAM

1000 GB SSD

AMD RX6800 Graphics

HP Reverb G2 VR headset

Thrustmaster T300RS GT with T3PA pedals

Raceroom RR3055 seat

Do you buy setups or do you setup your car alone ?

Honestly I must say I´ve bought CDA setups for my car and tweak them to my driving style.

Without that it took me to much time to work hours and hours on the setups to get the right one.

What makes you faster than the rest?

Nothing, I´m not faster.

What is you favorite car and why ?

First I took the Porsche…because it´s the Porsche but then I had to learn that it wasn´t the best choice for ACC, so I waited for the moment to change. Time has come as the BMW M4 GT3 was released in ACC. Since then I use it and I´m satisfied with it, it´s good to handle. Not the fastest on every track but overall a good choice.

What is you favorite circuit (s) and why ?

I don´t really have a favourite track, if you practice and prepare you´ll learn the critical points of every track and mange them.

better to ask me for the most hated track, it´s Snetterton, I´ll never get a good performance on this.

Who are your childhood racing heroes ?

Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost and all the other F1 heroes from the 80´s and 90´s

What is the best advice you would to give to a simracer ?

Never give up and don´t be too aggressive in first lap 😉

Are you satisfied with the Eseniors organization, and do you have suggestions to help bring a higher level of competition ?

I´m very satisfied and have no suggestion to change anything. The whole eSeniors administration does a great job. Thank you so much for that

And finally, the most important question...how many speeding tickets have you accumulated to date ?

Hm, never counted….not more than ten I´d say.
